What's the procedure for using a sauna? Shower before/after? Use soap?
What's the general process and rules for using the sauna at a gym? As far as showering goes...I read that for the after-sauna shower, you shouldn't use shampoo/conditioner or soap because they deposit a film which seeps into your just cleaned and steamed-open pores. Someone said you shouldn't use products in the before-sauna shower either because the scents will evaporate In The Sauna, making it possibly unpleasant for other users. Are they right? I don't want my skin to break out or anything. Any other tips?
Don't sweat it! (Pardon the pun). Generally you shouldn't use anything before going into the sauna. Any creams or soaps could seep into open pores, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you are trying to get all the "bad stuff" or impurities out of your system and stuff like lotions or soaps and stuff prohibits it.
Generally you just hop in after exercising or whenever you damn well please. Taking a shower before hand isn't really necessary, but it may help to get any make up, lotion, or anything else off if you have that kind of stuff on. Take about 15 to 20 minutes (no more!) for each session. Exit the Sauna and shower off immediately. This removes all of the crap that you are trying to sweat out and stops it from seeping back into your pores, as your pores close immediately.
Do several sessions. 15 to 20 minutes. Then shower, 15 to 20 more, then shower. 4 or 5 times or however many you like. It is most beneficial when you make a daily routine out of it, as it increases blood flow through the body.
At the end, shower with cold water to close the pores and soap up and clean hair as usual to remove the sweat and what not from your body. You won't need to worry about shampoo or other soaps because the cold water will close the poors quickly enough.
If your skin starts to break out, you may be doing it too often. Try out a wet sauna rather than a dry one if that's the case.
