how healthy is a sauna?
I was wandering if someone could list the pro's and cons of spending 5-10 minutes In The Sauna after each gym session.
I normally end up looking sunburnt for a few hours after each sauna session and was wandering if their may be some health risks to saunering
Unless you have some unusual health condition, like you can't sweat or something, a sauna is almost all pro and no con. Particularly in the moderate way you're talking about using it...it should be good for you.
The skin is often called the 3rd kidney. Sweating helps your body to eliminate toxins, and takes some of the work load off your kidneys.
A sauna after a workout can help the muscles to relax, and give similar benefits as stretching.
I don't know why your skin stays red for hours. The skin turns red because there is increased blood flow...again, under normal conditions a good thing. Sometimes you might even experience itching, usually considered a sign of toxins leaving the body.
However, if you have any reason to suspect your health is unusual somehow, you should ask your doctor.
Heatstroke happens when the core body temp goes over 105 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period of time, which would only normally be a danger if you stayed in a hot sauna for a long time...well over 30 minutes.
Gym saunas are almost never kept excessively hot. Most people can stand them much hotter. I personally like saunas very hot.
A good rule of thumb for any activity is if it makes you feel bad, be careful about it. Saunas make me feel good.
